Akhiok is a community in Kodiak Island Borough in the US state of Alaska , located in the south of Kodiak Island . The place had an estimated population of 85 residents in 2013.
geography
Akhiok is located at the southern end of Kodiak Island in southwest Alaska on Akhiok Bay. The larger city of Kodiak is approximately 129 km northeast and Alaska's largest city, Anchorage , is 547 kilometers northeast.
climate
Due to its location on the island of Kodiak, Akhiok is dominated by a strongly maritime climate. Thus there is hardly any frost formation in winter and fog often forms. The temperature fluctuations remain very small, the temperatures are mostly between −4 ° C and 12 ° C. Annual rainfall is a moderate 889 mm.
history
The original settlement of Kashukugniut was occupied by Russia in the early 19th century. In 1881 the residents moved to Alitak Bay. On the site of an earlier building, the new Russian Orthodox Church was built around 1900, and in 1933 the place received a post office. After the severe earthquake in 1964, the residents of the nearby, and now destroyed, town of Kaguyak moved to Akhiok.
