Pölten Stössing is a municipality with 841 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the St. district  in Lower Austria .

Stössing is located in the Mostviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the municipality covers 27.51 square kilometers, about 41 percent of the area is forested. The 655 meter high Hegerberg is located in the municipality of Stössing .

history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

The first mention of the name Stössing took place in 1204. In 1248 Stössing was named among the branch churches of the mother parish Böheimkirchen, together with Auserkasten , Kasten and Schildberg . In the 14th and 15th centuries, the parish church was expanded to its present form, during which time Stössing also had parish rights. The destruction and depopulation by the Turkish wars in 1529 and 1683 (Turkish chapel in Hochgschaid ) brought about a decline, so that the parish of Stössing had to be looked after by Kasten and Brand alternately . As part of the Josephine reforms, the Stössing parish was established in 1784.

Today's political community was founded around 1850. In 1895, today's Hochstrass Technical School for Ecological Agriculture and Housekeeping , at that time the Agricultural Housekeeping School of the Daughters of Divine Love , was founded as a private school and in 1917 was granted public rights. After the school was closed in 2009, the Hochstraß monastery , in which eight nuns lived at the end, also had to close in 2011.

In the course of the community reform in 1971, the communities of Stössing and Kasten near Böheimkirchen were merged. At the beginning of 1988, the two communities were divided again, although Stössing had to cede the Mayerhöfen cadastral community, which originally belonged to its municipality, to Michelbach.

Regular events

• Rossmarkt: The three-day horse and country festival takes place at the beginning of August with horse shows and horse shows. The racial focus is the Noriker .

In front of the center of Stössing is the local sports and leisure facility with a football pitch, asphalt curling alley and playground. There is also a riding school run by the Stössing riding club in the cadastral community of Hof, a riding hall and an open-air training course are available. Every week, various sports such as yoga, spinal gymnastics and Jiu-Jitsu take place in the elementary school's sports hall.

If the snow conditions allow, one of the few ski lifts in the Vienna Woods, the ski lift on the Hegerberg , is put into operation.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Stössing shows a pointed three-mountain, a golden linden tree and a hind on a black and green background. The pointed Dreiberg refers to the Hegerberg . Likewise, the linden tree planted in 1988 was included in the coat of arms on the occasion of the independence that was regained that year - in 1971 Stössing was united with Kasten near Böheimkirchen and only separated again 17 years later. The doe refers to the church patron, Saint Aegydius , who is always depicted with a doe. The green and black shield color stands for the wealth of meadows and forests in the municipality as well as for the narrow valleys of the Alpine foothills.
