The Annaberg House of the Austrian Alpine Association Mountain Association is located on the summit . A memorial commemorates the fallen of the First World War of the mountain club and the community of Annaberg .

Location and character of the mountain

The Tirolerkogel rises in the Lilienfeld district , only 6 km from the state border with Styria . The Bergstock has steep flanks, but in the summit region it forms an extensive plateau that extends approximately 2 km from southwest to northeast. The western part with the highest peak belongs to the municipality of Annaberg , the slightly lower eastern part to the area of the market town of Türnitz . In the west, the Tirolerkogel is bounded by the pass road over the Annaberg ( 976  m ), in the south by the narrow road through the parish valley to Kernhofer Gscheid ( 970  m ).

The summit region is only forested in the north-west - below the barren walls  - while wide meadows extend on the eastern half. In a north-easterly direction, the ridge has a second summit at 1340  m , which, together with the two points to the east, bears the field name Kalte Kuchl , an unwooded knoll with a good view. A third peak, the Ahornberg ( 1353  m ), is 1 km west of the main peak.

The mountain range can be climbed using several marked trails.

  • The shortest ascent begins in Annaberg , leads first to the Postalm "Am Gscheid" and then on over a cart path and a steep path to the summit. Walking time: about 1½ hours
  • From the Retzbachtal east of the Bergstock through the Iron Gate over the steep Dachsental, the Lackenkogel ( 1194  m ) and finally steep alpine pastures to the summit. Walking time: around 3 hours
  • From Retzbachtal on longer flatter route through the Falk gorge (where the Nixhöhle is) - and over the Lackenkogel the summit. Walking time: about 3½ hours
  • The scenic trail over the Eibl , to which a chairlift used to lead from Türnitz , the Karnerhofspitze ( 1124  m ) and the Österleinbrunn mountain rescue hut to the ridge, is particularly beautiful .

A variant of the Lower Austrian Mariazellerweg as well as the Traisentaler Rundwanderweg and the Waldmarkweg lead over the Tirolerkogel .

In winter the Tirolerkogel is a popular destination for ski tours . Here the most popular ascent leads from Annaberg over the Gscheid to the summit. Usually there is a snowcat track. The ascent from the northeast through the Sterngassl is somewhat more demanding.
