Großer Sulzberg (Lower Austria)
Great Sulzberg

The Great Sulzberg is at 1400  m above sea level. A. the highest mountain in the Türnitz Alps in Lower Austria .

Location and landscape

The Sulzberg is located north of the Hubertussee and just under 4 kilometers south of the Annaberg . While its northern flank lies in the area of the municipality of Annaberg , its southern flank belongs to the large area of the market town of Sankt Aegyd am Neuwalde, which is almost 14 kilometers to the east . The municipality boundary follows the ridge of the Großer Sulzberg, which runs in a west-east direction.

The partly tree-free ridge offers a comprehensive panoramic view that extends from the Schneeberg over the Göller to the Gesäuse .

Climbs

The Große Sulzberg is located away from major settlements and traffic routes, and there is no marked path leading to its summit. This is why it is rarely visited and has even been given the name “hidden mountain destination for path finders”.

The easiest way to get to the Große Sulzberg is via forest roads and unmarked hunting trails in around 2 hours from the Fadental in the south. The climbs from the Sattel Am Säbel in the west and from Ulreichsberg in the east run longer over hunting trails or poorly recognizable paths and require a greater sense of direction.

In winter, the mountain is a popular destination for ski tours and snowshoe hikes because of the comparatively low risk of avalanches (mostly ascent in the forest). The Fadental is also the best starting point for this.
