The Walster is a small river in the Türnitz Alps near Mariazell in Styria .

Run

The water intake of the whale is based on the white whale and the black whale. The Walster drains the Walstern (Valley of the White Whalers), the Fadental (Black Walster) and, as a unified course, the Rechengraben on the east side of the Bürgeralpe .

The river has a length of 6.2 km and flows into the Salza from the right in the Lower Hall valley before the Salzaklamm .

Hubertussee

In the course of the White Whales there is the approx. 15  hectare Hubertussee. Its dam is a few meters above the confluence of the Fadental. The lake was created on the occasion of the silver wedding anniversary of the then hunting master Arthur Krupp in 1906 and was a gift from Margret Krupp to her husband, who was enthusiastic about hunting. This created a larger fish area. Today you can find lake trout , brown trout , rainbow trout and grayling in the Hubertussee and Walster lakes .

Leisure and culture

The area along the Walster belongs to the Austrian Federal Forests . The entire valley of the Walster is a nature reserve . There are extensive hunting and fishing grounds here . Monuments show that u. a. Emperor Franz Joseph I , Count Morzin and the Prussian military Karl von Bülow also stopped to hunt.

On the shores of the Hubertussee is the Bruder-Klaus-Kirche (built 1966–1967), which is consecrated to St. Niklaus von Flüe .

The Walster is also used by kayakers at higher water levels .

Due to its well-preserved nature, Kurt Mündl shot a documentary film with the title Das Stille Tal - Naturpfade zum Hubertussee throughout the year 2010 , which was broadcast on ORF .
