The Tiroler Kogel is a striking two-thousanders on the western edge of the Tennengebirge in Salzburg on the border between Tennengau and Pongau . It breaks off to the west with a rock and craggy flank up to 1,800 meters high into the deeply cut valley of the Salzach and therefore opens up great views of the Hagengebirge and the Hochkönig (mountain) towering opposite . To the north, the mountain is connected to the Sulzauer Kopf by an exposed rock ridge, while to the east it drops over the Schrofen and Karren slopes into the Pitschenberg Valley with the Leopold-Happisch-Haus and the Gruber Ice Cave . A little further south, the lower neighboring peaks of Hochkogel (2,283 m) and Windischkopf (2,252 m) rise .

Routes

The Tiroler Kogel is one of the striking and not so easily accessible mountains in the Tennengebirge. Surefootedness , a head for heights , good physical condition and alpine experience are essential for an ascent . Unexpected dangers, such as getting lost in fog or sudden storms, make the Tennengebirge a feared area among mountaineers. Even on beautiful summer days, the summit cross on the Tiroler Kogel is not visited very often. The following routes are possible:

  • From the Eisriesenwelt , walking time: 3 hours, difference in altitude: 800 meters

The shortest and most traveled, but most difficult route begins at the Dr.-Friedrich-Oedl-Haus near the Eisriesenwelt and leads over the Hochkogelsteig to a hunting lodge on the plateau. It continues in the direction of Leopold-Happisch-Haus until the last (exposed) ascent to the Tiroler Kogel follows on the left. Marked throughout and secured in difficult places (II according to UIAA ).

  • From Stegenwald, walking time: 6 hours, difference in altitude: 1800 meters

The classic normal route is long and extremely strenuous, therefore only recommended with an overnight stay. The starting point is the Gasthaus Stegenwald in the Salzach Valley directly on the Tauern motorway (exit Pass Lueg). Following the hut path no.220 it goes over the Ofenrinne, Grünwaldalm, Stiege and Pitschenbergalm to the Leopold-Happisch-Haus . From there on the designated route over the Schrofen and Karren terrain, the last to be exposed to the summit of the Tiroler Kogel. Continuously marked and partially secured, difficulty I according to UIAA .
