Falkenschlucht (Lower Austria)

Entrance to the Falkenschlucht

The Falkenschlucht is a year-round water-bearing up to 100 m deep gorge in the market town of Türnitz in the district of Lilienfeld in Lower Austria .

description

The gorge is about 600 m long, at the bottom a maximum of 20 m wide and accessed by a footpath that leads over several footbridges and bridges. However, the Falkenbach has to be crossed several times over laid stones, which is why the Falkenschlucht is considered impassable after heavy rainfall. The heart of the Falkenschlucht is a 50 m long and 3 m wide crevice where a footbridge runs directly over the Falkenbach.

At the northern entrance there is the Innereben hunting lodge and the Innereben grotto , an 8 meter deep cave in which spring water rushes into the cave.

Approximately in the middle of the Falkenschlucht a steep side path leads to the 70 m long Nixhöhle (or Nixluke ).

The Falkenschlucht and the Nixhöhle were declared a natural monument in 1957.

Driveway

Access is via Türnitz, where you first follow the Traisenbach and then the Retzbach to over the Rotte Weidenau . The parking lot is located immediately after the Eisernes Tor gorge , which can be driven through by car. From there a forest path leads to the Falkenschlucht. At the upper (southern) exit of the Falkenschlucht you can return to the northern exit of the Falkenschlucht via an easily accessible forest path.

From the south there is an access at Ulreichsberg , roughly where the Walster crosses the street.

In the summer months, there is also a slow train from Türnitz to the entrance to the Falkenschlucht.

Trivia

The "hunting lodge without window" on the northern forest path to the gorge is a small power station that is fed by the pond above.
