history
The open-air farm, which no longer exists today, is mentioned in a document in 1321 as the farm of the "Frylanters". This farm was acquired in 1820 by Johann Fruhwirth, who ran a large ironworks nearby, which in its heyday (1840–1870) employed up to 600 workers and produced rifles, bayonets and sabers. On the site of the Freilandhof, Freiland Castle was built in 1852 by the Fruhwirth family of manufacturers . With the introduction of Werndl rifles in the Austrian army , production was reduced and ultimately abandoned; From then on, Fruhwirth dedicated itself to products made of wood.
Prince Franz I von Liechtenstein acquired the factory in 1931 and the castle in 1942. During the Second World War , a school for wounded SS members was set up in the castle. It has suffered considerable damage from looting in the last days of the war and the Russian occupiers.
From 1948 onwards, Freiland Castle was available to the War Victims Association, which set up a rest home for children of war victims here. The castle initially offered space for 250 children and was later expanded to accommodate 400 children. From the 1970s the home was run under the name Friedrich Karrerhaus , a recreation center for war victims and the disabled . Today it is a recreation hotel with seminars.
Another attraction in the village is the field and industrial railway museum Freiland , a collection of rail-bound vehicles in small gauges, with some days also being driven.
