Ludwig Döbler (born October 5, 1801 in Vienna , † April 18, 1864 in Gstettenhof near Türnitz ) was an Austrian magician .

Life

Döbler studied physics and also gave lectures in Vienna and other cities. But he had his great successes as a magician and sleight of hand . From a young age he was engaged in magic tricks. At the invitation of Goethe in 1831 he performed his sleight of hand in a small group.

A fascinated Goethe wrote in July 1831 to the 30-year-old Ludwig Döbler in his studbook. His career as a magician in Vienna began in 1839 with a guest performance in the Theater in der Josefstadt . Leopold Ludwig Döbler was one of the most distinguished magicians of his time, frequented the highest circles. His magic tricks inspired Emperor Franz , Prince Metternich and the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV and Queen Victoria of Great Britain . He has made numerous guest appearances at home and abroad. His showpiece was “Flora's flower donation”: From an empty hat, numerous charming little bouquets of flowers appeared, each with a poem. Döbler's words: "Here a bouquet, there a bouquet, another bouquet ..." became a standing expression. A miracle fountain delivers every drink desired by the audience, a painting of a winter landscape changes to a springtime picture, a single shot of a pistol ignites 200 candles placed on a table: these are just a few examples of a long series of constantly evolving amazing effects, in the construction of which Döbler used his natural science Knowledge made use of.

Döbler was also a scientist and inventor. With the help of one of a magic lantern -like apparatus called a Phantaskop he produced moving images and is now considered one of the fathers and the early pioneers of the movie. Döbler has received many awards, including a member of the Royal Academy in Berlin and holder of the gold medal for art and science. With his art he acquired a considerable fortune and was able to acquire the Klafterbrunn Castle near Eschenau in Lower Austria.

Another side of his personality became visible to an astonished public in 1850: The celebrated cosmopolitan bourgeoisie withdrew from the public eye, devoted himself to the common good and was elected mayor of the communities of Eschenau and Traisen in Lower Austria . Döbler does solid local political development work, for which the imperial family awarded him the golden cross of merit in 1854 . Ludwig Döbler died on April 18, 1864 on his estate at Gstettenhof near Türnitz , Lower Austria.

In 1907 the Döblergasse in Vienna- Neubau (7th district) was named after him. The Austrian Post was a 7 on the occasion of his 200th birthday on 5 October 2001 Schilling - special stamp out.
