A loading station is part of a rail system which corresponds to the envelope of goods is used. This can be part of a train station , a stop or a system of the free route . In common parlance, a “ loading point ” is also often used as a loading point; also technically referred to as a local freight facility in the German railway system.

In the Encyclopedia of Railways in 1915, a loading point was defined as “ a place next to goods sheds, ramps or driveways, used for loading or unloading goods, animals, the military, etc. In this sense the term is used, for example, in the German Military Transport Regulations. In individual areas, L. is also understood to mean places located at the stations or on the open route, connected to the railway by tracks, which the railway administration has left to individual parties to load or unload the wagons intended for them. "

The loading point can either be a loading lane , a goods shed , a loading ramp or a combination of these and can be equipped with or without handling equipment - such as cranes , conveyor systems , filling spouts and more. It is always connected to roads with an access option, except when this is used to handle goods between railways of different gauges .

Loading points are not only to be found in freight yards or as part of a train station with total traffic; they can also be found in pure passenger stations , for example for loading cars , as a smaller industrial transshipment station or for supplying dining cars . Loading points that are not part of a train station are usually designed as alternate junctions and enable the train to “lock itself in” at the alternate junction, i.e. release the route for further operation. In this case, loading points must be equipped with side protection devices.
