The Aschacher Bahn is a standard-gauge regional line that branches off the Wels – Passau line at the Haiding station . It usually descends 20 km further north to the Danube, which it reaches at Aschach . It crosses the electrified line of the Linz local railway in the station of the district town Eferding , which was opened in 1912 by the local railway AG Linz – Eferding – Waizenkirchen . It is single-track and not electrified.

history

The builder and owner was the local railway company Wels-Aschach , founded by the city of Wels , which opened the line on August 20, 1886 for the locomotive railway from Wels (Haiding) to Aschach an der Donau on the basis of the concession document of October 10, 1885 . The operation was led by the respective state railway from the beginning. After the construction of the line from Wels via Sattledt to Unterrohr (later the Almtalbahn ), the company operated as Welser Lokalbahn  AG. The trains started and ended in Wels . Until the complete double-track expansion of the Passau wing of the Westbahn, the local railway already had its own track from Wels to Haiding. The Wels Puchberg (formerly Puchberg near Wels) stop on this section was served by the regional trains of the Aschacher Bahn until it was closed.

In Aschach on August 1, 1894, a 0.8 km long towing railway was added, which led from the station to the Danube area. From 1898 to 1914 and 1932 to 1937, it also served as a feeder for passenger traffic to the Danube. In 1958/59 it was converted by Donaukraftwerke  AG (DoKW) Aschach into an access route to the power plant.

In 1942 the Deutsche Reichsbahn - as the state railway at that time - became the owner of the previous Welser Lokalbahn AG, including the Aschacher Bahn. After the Second World War, it was operated by the Austrian Federal Railways . Since December 9, 2007, freight traffic has been managed by Stern & Hafferl . Nowadays, the route is only important for freight traffic (including to the Agrana corn starch factory in Aschach). Passenger traffic was always poorly developed in this area - until May 2000 there were seven pairs of trains during the week and four at the weekend. Since then, all courses, with the exception of one pair of trains in the morning, have been run with buses, which also go to places that are not in the catchment area of the railway.

Since July 1, 2008, another pair of trains has been running in the summer months on weekends and afternoons.

On January 1, 2021, the route will be taken over by the state of Upper Austria . The integration into the Linz local railway or the operational management by Stern & Hafferl are in the room. After the takeover, a ten-kilometer stretch will be electrified . It is also considered to renovate the Eferding station. With the timetable change on December 15, 2019, all passenger traffic between Haiding and Aschach an der Donau was suspended.

vehicles

Typical locomotives on this route were the locomotives of the series 2060 , 2062 and 2067 (most recently also 2043 and 2048 ) in freight traffic , as well as the railcars of the series 5070 , 5081 and finally 5047 in passenger traffic .

Today the two locomotives of the series 2016 from Stern & Hafferl handle the freight traffic.
