history

Wallern was first mentioned in a document in 815. This year the priest Engilger donated his Adwaldi church on the Dratihaha river to Bishop Hatto of Passau . The first "h" of Dratihaha in the handwriting is apparently a typo ; The correct name should be Dratinaha - pronounced "Dratin-acha", the 'Drat (i) n-bach'.

The parish has belonged to St. Florian Monastery since 1411 . In the Reformation of the 16th century, the Protestant faith was widespread and lived on after the Counter-Reformation . After the tolerance patent was issued in 1781, a prayer house was built. In the years 1851/52 the establishment of the Protestant church, which bears the name Dreieinigkeitskirche , took place.

The market survey took place on January 1, 1983.

Population development

In 1991 the community had 2,618 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 the number rose to 2,865 inhabitants. The reasons for this strong increase were a positive birth balance and a positive migration balance . From 2001 to 2011 the emigration almost canceled out with the positive birth balance (+53), so that the population remained almost constant, and then grew to 3,039 people by 2018.

politics

The municipal council has 25 members and has had the following distribution of seats since 2015: ÖVP (11), FPÖ (6), SPÖ (5), GRÜNE (3).

In 2016, the municipality decided to introduce a fee for swimming pool owners. Since the filling of the pools is concentrated on a few days (mid-April / early May) of the year, which means that water consumption quadruples during this time, the municipality has to buy water at five times the price instead of 1 € / m³ during this time. Owners of pools with over 7 m² swimming area should pay an additional annual fee per square meter. There is a reduced fee for swimming ponds, which are usually filled all year round.

mayor

  • until 2008 Friedrich Schlager (ÖVP)

The community colors are red-yellow-green .

The paw cross , reproduced in alternating colors, represents the St. Florian monastery , which took over the church of Wallern, which was attested in 815, but can also be used as a symbol for the work of the Catholic and Protestant parishes in an ecumenical spirit. The oak leaf is supposed to symbolize the place name ("with the people in the forest").
