Jakob Ernst Koch (Superintendent, 1865)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jakob Ernst Koch , depending on the method of counting Jakob Ernst Koch III. or Jakob Ernst Koch IV. (born August 3, 1865 in Wallern an der Trattnach , † November 23, 1947 in Linz ) was the fourth pastor of the Protestant parish Wallern and superintendent of the Protestant superintendent of Upper Austria .

Life

He was a scion of the pastor dynasty Koch , whose members determined the religious life of the Upper Austrian Evangelical Church as pastors, seniors and superintendents since the tolerance patent of Emperor Josef II. After attending elementary school and high school, he studied Protestant theology - more at the request of his parents than on his own initiative . He completed his training as a candidate for parish office at the universities in Vienna, Erlangen, Leipzig and Greifswald. Before he became pastor in Scharten in 1890 , he worked for two years with his father Jakob Ernst III. as superintendental vicar. After his death in 1908 he took over the pastor's position in Wallern.

When the position of superintendent had to be filled after his uncle Josef Friedrich Koch retired , he was elected as his successor. On June 29, 1921, he was solemnly inducted into office.

As superintendent he took part in the Stockholm World Church Conference in 1925 as a representative of the Evangelical Church AB in Austria .

Koch played a leading role in drafting the 1931 church constitution, which, however, never came into force for political reasons.

After retiring in 1936, he resumed preaching and pastoral work in Wallern from 1942 to 1945, although without officially exercising the pastor's office.

Works

As a church historian, he wrote a history of the hymn book question in Upper Austria since the days of tolerance and a work entitled Luther und das Landl , which was widely used because of its comprehensibility and methodological clarity.

Familiar

Jakob Ernst Koch IV was married to Emilie Ludwig (1868–1923) for the first time. The couple had three daughters and two sons. The older son, Jakob Ernst Koch V., also embarked on a church career and became a pastor in Ramsau am Dachstein.

After the death of his first wife, Jakob Ernst Koch married the widowed Amalie Löhr geb. Ludwig, one of Emilie's cousins.

Varia

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the death of Leonhard Kaiser , who was executed at the stake , Koch inaugurated a memorial stone for the evangelical hero at the so-called Gries in Schärding.
