Franz von Schaub

Franz Schaub, from 1870 Ritter von Schaub (born April 23, 1817 in Großschweinbarth , † April 28, 1871 in Trieste ) was an Austrian astronomer and oceanographer .

Life

Schaub was initially trained at the local village school in his home town and then, on the initiative of the village pastor, sent to the high school in Josefstadt in Vienna . There he initially needed the tutoring of his home pastor, but was finally able to obtain his degree and in 1833 switch to the University of Vienna . He initially took up a degree in medicine, but also studied the natural sciences, mathematics and astronomy, to which he devoted himself more intensively as his studies increased. From 1836 to 1838 he also dealt with geodesy at the Vienna Polytechnic . Then he was initially a student assistant, then from 1840 assistant and finally from 1843 to 1849 adjunct at the University Observatory Vienna . During this time he also gave private lessons to young nobles. It was in 1850 at the University of Munich to Dr. phil. PhD .

Schaub followed a call as professor of nautical astronomy at the Trade and Nautical Academy in Trieste . In addition, he was commissioned to set up an observatory at the local Naval Cadet College, of which he became director in 1857. During this time he also gave the Archduke Maximilian lessons in navigation, which ultimately led to the publication of the nautical tables .

Schaub then went on extensive research trips in the Mediterranean region and finally on study trips to relevant institutes in Europe. After his return in 1860 he became head of the newly established Hydrographic Institute . From 1865 he was also director of the commercial and nautical academy, then in 1867 also school councilor and inspector for the naval schools and the naval pioneer school established in 1870, in which position he pushed through a reorganization of the schools.

Schaub received the Order of the Iron Crown for his services in 1870 and was raised to the nobility . He had been a member of the Leopoldina Academy of Natural Sciences since November 2, 1864 . His merits were varied and included advances in research and teaching. He was also able to achieve corrections through new measurements.
