The Siebenbrunn – Engelhartstetten local line was a single-track, non-electrified branch line in Marchfeld in Lower Austria . The route was last closed due to impassability and was finally dismantled in December 2013. Since 2019 parts of the route have been used as a walkway and bike path.
history
The Marchfeld was part of the granary of the monarchy. Natural products of all kinds were produced here. The Leopoldsdorf sugar factory was opened in 1902 . In order to be able to cope with the transports, the construction of a standard-gauge local railway was decided by the Lower Austrian state parliament in April 1902 ; the concession issued in favor of the Aktiengesellschaft Lokalbahn Siebenbrunn-Leopoldsdorf-Engelhartstetten-Orth for construction and operation was notarized on June 27, 1908.
The provisional locomotive operation approved on November 25, 1908 began on December 16, 1908 between Siebenbrunn -Leopoldsdorf and Engelhartstetten ; the technical and police examination, combined with the testing of the bridge construction, took place on June 18, 1909. On June 28, 1909, the line was ceremoniously opened with a tour , and opened to general traffic on the 30th of the month.
In Breitstetten a line branched off to Orth on the Danube . The operation was handled by the Lower Austrian State Railways . In 1921 the railway line, like all NÖLB lines, was taken over by the Austrian Federal Railways . On January 1, 1937, traffic between Breitstetten and Orth was suspended, but on June 21, 1938, the Deutsche Reichsbahn resumed freight traffic. This was finally discontinued in December 1998.
Passenger and freight trains were still running on the Siebenbrunn – Engelhartstetten route until December 31, 2002, until operations were completely discontinued due to the low capacity utilization and replaced by bus routes running in parallel. In October 2003, sugar beet was still transported by rail, a special trip by the Association of Railway Friends with the museum diesel multiple unit 5041.03 on October 19, 2003 was the last opportunity for the public to travel the route.
In 2019, parts of the route were reopened as a pedestrian and cycle path. On May 25, 2019, the headstetten – Loimersdorf – Engelhartstetten section opened. A week later, on June 2, 2019, the Leopoldsdorf – Breitstetten – Orth section was also opened.
Route
The route to Engelhartstetten begins at Siebenbrunn station at km 0.098. After a short stretch, the local railway branches off to the left from the Marchegger Ostbahn in a south-east direction. Then comes the village of Leopoldsdorf, where, in addition to the bus stop, there was a connection to the sugar factory from 1902. After a straight stretch the Breitstetten station follows, after the station the local railway branches off to Orth an der Donau. There follows a short straight stretch, then after a left curve comes the Straudorf stop. The Haringsee stop is just as short, followed by a short, straight stretch from the Kopfstetten-Eckartsau stop, which is in a curve. From here, the deposed last Austrian emperor joined Charles on 23 March 1919 the journey into exile in Switzerland. Then you come to the penultimate stop on the route that is now abandoned, the Loimersdorf stop. After a total of 22.324 km from Siebenbrunn-Leopoldsdorf you come to the former end point of the Engelhartstetten route.
