The Faden , also known as Fadenbach , is a former branch or backwater of the unregulated Danube in the Gänserndorf district in Lower Austria , the course of which borders the Donau-Auen National Park in parts to the north.

Vienna

In the course of the Viennese regulation of the Danube in 1870, the Fadenbach was cut off and thus robbed of its source. After the Wiener Pforte the left bank of the northern edge of the Danube ran over the Schwarze Lacke in Jedlesee , where the beginning of the Marchfeld Canal was built at the beginning of the former Lacke . The further course is the Floridsdorfer Wasserpark , the Alte Donau , the Mühlwasser , the Groß-Enzersdorfer Arm , the Eberschüttwasser , Mittelwasser and the Kühwörther Wasser , which are now standing water.

Lower Austria

The Fadenbach begins in the Lobau and runs through Groß-Enzersdorf with the cadastral communities Mühlleiten and Schönau an der Donau, Mannsdorf an der Donau , Orth an der Donau , Eckartsau with the cadastral communities Eckartsau, Wagram an der Donau and Witzelsdorf, and ends in Engelhartstetten in the cadastral community of Stopfenreuth.

The revitalization of the Fadenbach and the networking of the fragmented waters is a long-term project of the affected communities with the Donau-Auen National Park and the Austrian Federal Forests . Opinions are divided on the concept of groundwater recharge .

fauna

In 1992 the European dogfish, considered to be extinct in Austria since 1975, was rediscovered in the Fadenbach between Orth and Eckartsau. Since then, it has been able to be resettled more widely in its original distribution areas as part of breeding programs.

At the Fadenbach between Orth and Eckartsau, 34 species of dragonflies were observed.
