4Q156 is the name of a fragmentarily preserved manuscript from Qumran . 4Q denotes cave no. 4 of Q umran in which the fragments were found, 156 is a consecutive number.

The fragment contains verses 12-15 and 18-21 of the 16th chapter of the book Leviticus in Aramaic . Based on palaeographic comparisons, the fragment can be dated to the end of the 2nd century BC. It is the oldest surviving Targum .

Linguistically striking is the use of the root כסי to translate the Hebrew word כפרת ( Kapporet ), which is not translated in later Targumim, but is given as an Aramaized Hebrew loan word (כפרתא).
