The parish church Orth an der Donau stands east of Orth Castle in the market town of Orth an der Donau in the Gänserndorf district in Lower Austria . history

One church was mentioned in a document in the 9th century. The parish was probably founded around 1100 by the diocese of Regensburg .

architecture

The former fortified church was surrounded by a former fortified cemetery with ramparts and moats. The church building, which is medieval in essence and with a high defense tower, was rebuilt in 1568 and rebuilt in 1568 and the Turkish war in 1683 in 1689 under Count Strattmann with the preservation of the late Gothic core structure.

The mighty west tower in front of the nave shows a chordal structure and a cordon cornice as well as loopholes, the baroque sound floor has arched windows, the onion helmet is from the 17th century and was renewed in 1782. The simple nave under a high pitched roof has baroque arched windows and baroque buttresses. The retracted choir has baroque arched windows. To the north is a two-storey baroque sacristy extension from the first half of the 18th century, followed by another later sacristy.

The interior of the church shows itself as a three-bay nave under a stitch cap barrel vault on pilasters. The triumphal arch wall shows a stuccoed heraldic cartouche of Count Strattmann von Putten held in 1688. The wooden organ gallery on iron supports was built in the first half of the 19th century. The retracted one-bay choir with a five-eighth closure has a lancet barrel vault on pilasters. In the area of ​​the sacristy roof, a walled-up, pointed-arched Gothic window has been preserved on the choir side. Under the choir there is a crypt with a gothic window walled up on the south side in the floor area.

The baroque frescoes in the nave with the glorification of Mary and the Fall of the Angels with the helpers in the nave and resurrection in the choir were painted by Hans Alexander Brunner in 1950.

Furnishing

The simple high altar from 1780, incorporated into the choir closure, shows the high altar sheet St. Michael von Johann Nepomuk Höferl 1819, above the Eye of God, he carries the console figures Peter and Paul and a classicist tabernacle with adoring angels.

There is a remarkable pulpit from the end of the 17th century, on the basket are figures of The Four Apostles between twisted columns .

The organ was built by Josef Loyp in 1848 and expanded in 1859 in a classicist case from the fourth quarter of the 18th century. Joachim Gross names a bell in 1689.

A small grave plate made of gilded copper shows the coat of arms of the Graswein family in 1620.
