Philipp Wilhelm Ritter von Hamm (born July 5, 1820 in Darmstadt ; † November 8, 1880 in Vienna ) was a German agricultural scientist, entrepreneur, politician and writer.

Life

Hamm was the son of a Hessian court chamber councilor. He attended high school in his hometown Darmstadt and studied camera science and chemistry in Giessen , where he was a student of Justus Liebig . In Gießen he joined the Corps Teutonia Gießen in 1842 .

Soon after receiving his doctorate as a Dr. phil. In 1843 he was employed as a professor of chemistry and agriculture in Hofwyl in Switzerland, and in 1844 as director of the agricultural school in Rütti .

In 1847 he moved to Leipzig and became editor of the Agronomische Zeitung . In 1848 Hamm took part in the campaign to Schleswig-Holstein as an officer in the von der Tann'schen Freikorps.

In 1850 he married in Audigast at Pegau Marie Nanny von Moisy (1832-1908), the daughter of the local manor Friedrich Adolph von Moisy.

In 1851 he founded the oldest factory for agricultural machines in Germany in Eutritzsch near Leipzig.

In addition to his scientific and entrepreneurial activities, Wilhelm Hamm was also politically active. From 1862 he was a member of the Leipzig City Council and was a deputy member of the Second Chamber of the Estates Assembly of the Kingdom of Saxony .

In 1867 he was appointed ministerial advisor to the Ministry of Commerce in Vienna and in the same year took part in the opening of the Suez Canal as an Austrian delegate . In 1868 he moved to the Ministry of Agriculture.
