Herbert Lederer , actually Herbert Andl , (born June 12, 1926 in Vienna ) is an Austrian actor and director.

Life and work

Herbert Lederer studied at the Vienna University of Theater Studies , German Studies and Psychology and a doctorate in 1948 with a dissertation on the Moscow Art Theater to Dr. phil.

In 1948 Lederer went to the St. Pölten City Theater for two years ; from 1950 to 1960 he worked as an actor, director and dramaturge on several German and Austrian theaters; In 1960 he created the one- man theater that made him internationally known .

On October 12, 1970, Herbert Lederer opened the (one-man cast) Theater am Schwedenplatz (Franz-Josefs-Kai 21, Vienna-Innere Stadt ), a small stage that had arisen from a former laundry room , in which he performed around 180 Gave performances - for which he was director, head of equipment, director and author at the same time and which cemented his reputation as an all-round talent and Viennese theater original with a “phenomenal” memory performance. At the time this theater opened, its founder had fourteen programs in his repertoire and, in the summer months, played in the theater in Pongau , which he had also created  ; he also offered a literary cercle on Wednesday evening with Austrian authors on Schwedenplatz . In his theater in 1971 he exhibited the cycle Tewje, the milkman, created by his friend Adi Holzer . On August 11, 1972, Lederer played the 300th performance of the Biedermeier picture sheet Vienna back then , in which he gave twelve different roles, combined with a correspondingly urged change of costume and make-up.

From the opening day to June 10, 2006, Herbert Lederer appeared in 69 in-house productions 6,142 times on the stage of his theater on Schwedenplatz. In June 2006, Lederer closed the one-man stage with an open day and announced that in future only guest performances would be performed.

Herbert Lederer was supported in his theater work by a single employee: his wife, the actress Erna Perger .

An important part of Herbert Lederer's artistic life is his guest tour. They took him around the world three times. In the course of forty years he has been to over a hundred countries on five continents.

assessment

In addition to his work as an author, Lederer is basically the last representative of the famous Viennese cabaret scene that began in the basement and student theaters of the inter-war period and flourished again after 1945. His way led through important venues: studios of the universities, theater on Parkring, grandstand , Nestroytheater in Josefsgasse and others. In contrast to many of his colleagues, who went through a similar socialization, Lederer withdrew from the trend: He was not looking for a permanent engagement at renowned theaters, but preferred the independent and independent theater life until he found a permanent place to stay at the Theater am Schwedenplatz in 1970 .
