Susanne Ayoub (* 1956 in Baghdad ) is an Austrian - Iraqi writer, journalist and filmmaker .

Life

She fled to Vienna with her Hungarian-Austrian mother at the age of six . Since completing her studies in theater studies , art history and philosophy at the University of Vienna , she has worked as a writer and director for ORF and as a freelance journalist . She founded the theater group Trio , for which she wrote plays and staged them.

Baghdad project

In 2002 she went on a trip to Iraq, originally she wanted to make a film documentary. The project failed due to bureaucratic hurdles and in 2004 she finally published an audio book about this trip entitled Born in Baghdad . A 15-minute fragment of the planned film was only shown once at the presentation of this audio book. During a second trip she wrote an art report series for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . In 2002 she was invited to Alpbach for the European Forum as Author of the Year for a reading and subsequent discussion. The subject of her lecture was also her experiences in Iraq. In 2006 she was finally able to finish her film documentation: Baghdad Fragment, a 42-minute film essay, premiered at the Austrian film festival Diagonale. In 2008 the DVD + CD Baghdad Fragments was released .

Literary work

She also writes detective novels, her book Engelsgift , which was published in 2004 by Hoffmann + Campe Hamburg and in which she takes up a historical criminal case, was an international success. She often draws the material of her works from real women's lives from the past, which she then processes as fiction . In the radio play Sister Kafka she processed z. B. the life and execution of the nun Maria Restituta .
