Schörkhuber's novel Quicksilbertage (2014), which is set in Vienna, is about the entanglements of the past, present and future. The narrator, in their early thirties, who no longer wants to belong to the Praktikum generation, thinks about what life as a paper cut would look like, with all the cuts in it and the notches of cold times; it would have done its work according to a certain pattern. The narrating authority cannot do anything with its past, has not been able to find access to it. In search of the present and the past, her own as well as the country, she wants to change her perspective and no longer simply accept anything. What else would you expect?
The literary critic Christian Schacherreiter said in a review that appeared in the Salzburger Nachrichten that Eva Schörkhuber presented a novel called Mercury Days, which is impressive due to its outstanding linguistic quality alone. But the subject of the book is also quite explosive.
Her story Die Blickfängerin (2013) gives the word “moment” its double meaning by telling it from the perspective of a woman who makes the gaze of people who live on the margins of society more permanent. She catches glances at video and then assigns them to certain categories. It becomes clear to her that documenting this kind of thing is not a private matter, because distance is broken when people meet, some of whom look through a camera lens and others express themselves politically, for example because they have to express themselves in order not to leave the community being outcast from the middle class, refugees for example. The escape story she experienced herself slowly takes shape after the narrator has started to follow one of the looks outside.
