Jeffrey Michael Friedman (born July 20, 1954 in Orlando , Florida ) is an American molecular geneticist and professor at Rockefeller University in New York City .

Friedman studied medicine at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and graduated with an MD from Albany Medical College at Union University in Albany , New York, at the age of 22 . He initially worked as a doctor in internal medicine at Albany Medical Center Hospital .

After a one year research assistant with Mary Jeanne Kreek at Rockefeller University in New York City , Friedman switched to research. In 1986 he earned a Ph.D. from James E. Darnell at Rockefeller University. and in the same year became both junior professor and researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute . His dissertation was entitled The regulation of gene expression is an integral element in the development of a multicellular organism from the totipotential fertilized egg . Friedman has been a full professor at Rockefeller University since 1995.

Building on the work of Douglas Coleman , Friedman discovered the fat cell hormone leptin (a polypeptide ) in 1994 and subsequently described its effects on metabolism and its role in regulating appetite and food consumption, body weight and body fat percentage.
