Heinrich Wieland Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Heinrich Wieland Prize (HWP) is named after the German chemist and Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Otto Wieland (1877–1957). Since 1964, the Heinrich Wieland Prize has been awarded once a year for innovative scientific work in the fields of biochemistry, chemistry, physiology and clinical medicine of fats and lipids. The area in which the HWP is awarded today (as of 2013) are biologically active molecules and systems as well as their clinical significance in chemistry, biochemistry and physiology. The prize is one of the most prestigious awards internationally and is endowed with 100,000 euros (as of 2015).

history

The prize was established in 1963 and has been awarded annually since 1964, including to later Nobel Prize winners. The Heinrich Wieland Gold Medal , which is not awarded annually, has also existed since 1989 as an award for life's work . In 2000 the Margarine Institute ended the sponsorship role for the award, which the institute had held since 1963; since then, the prize has initially been donated by the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim . The reason is the close ties between the namesake and the Boehringer family and company; Heinrich Wieland was a cousin of Helene Boehringer, wife of company founder Albert Boehringer . Heinrich Wieland was also a consultant at Boehringer Ingelheim from 1915 to the 1920s, during which time he set up the company's first scientific department. The award has been endowed by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation since 2011 .
