Roger A. Nicoll

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roger Andrew Nicoll (* 1941 in Princeton , New Jersey ) is an American neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco .

Life

Nicoll initially studied biology and chemistry at Lawrence University in Appleton , Wisconsin , before moving to the University of Rochester Medical School in Rochester , New York . After reading a book by the physiologist and Nobel laureate John Carew Eccles , Nicoll took a break from medical school to do electrophysiological studies at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a year . After acquiring the MD in 1968, Nicoll returned to the NIH. After two years of teaching and collaboration with Eccles at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York in Buffalo , New York, Nicoll received a professorship at the University of California, San Francisco in 1975 , where he is now (2012) professor of cellular and molecular pharmacology directs research into the cellular and molecular mechanisms of learning and memory in mammals .

Act

By means of electrophysiological experiments, Nicoll was able to gain fundamental knowledge about neuronal and synaptic plasticity in vertebrates . In addition, he was able to elucidate various mechanisms of the action of certain active substances and neurotransmitters - including cannabinoids and endocannobinoids (see also endocannabinoid system ) - and gain deeper insights into the differentiation and complexity of synaptic signal transduction in the brain.
