Eckhart Swiss
Eckhart Schweizer (born February 5, 1936 in Stuttgart ) is a German biochemist.
Life
Schweizer studied at the University of Tübingen and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and received his doctorate from the Max Planck Institute for Cell Chemistry in Munich. As a post-graduate student , he spent two years at the University of Wisconsin's Molecular Biology Laboratory . He then headed a working group at the University of Würzburg , where he completed his habilitation in 1971 and became a scientific adviser. In 1974 he received the newly founded chair for biochemistry at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg . From 1993 to 1995 he was Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and from 1996 to 2000 he was the Senate representative of this faculty.
For a long time he was an expert reviewer for the German Research Foundation for Biochemistry.
Schweizer deals with molecular biology, enzymology ( multi-enzyme complexes ) and gene regulation, including lipid metabolism and organelle biogenesis . He was involved in the genome project of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and in establishing this yeast as a model organism in the molecular biological research of multicellular cells.
Awards
In 1971 he received the Chemistry Prize of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and in 1976 the Heinrich Wieland Prize .
