Jens Claus Brüning

Jens Claus Brüning (born June 4, 1966 in Cologne ) is a German molecular biologist and geneticist . He is Professor of Genetics at the University of Cologne and Scientific Coordinator of the Cluster of Excellence CECAD of the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments to promote science and research at German universities. Since spring 2011 he has been Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for Metabolic Research and Director of the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Preventive Medicine (ZEDP) at Cologne University Hospital .

Life

Brüning studied human medicine in Cologne from 1985 to 1992. He received his doctorate in 1993. He then completed further training as a specialist in internal medicine at the University of Cologne by January 2001 . He interrupted this for a post-doctoral research stay at the Joslin Diabetes Center of Harvard Medical School from 1994 to 1997, which was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) .

After passing the examination on endocrinology in December 2001, he completed his habilitation in internal medicine in March 2002 and was promoted to senior physician . At the beginning of the summer semester, in April 2004, he accepted the chair for genetics to succeed Klaus Rajewsky at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Cologne.

Research focus

Brüning works with the genetically modified mice developed by his predecessor on the signaling mechanism of insulin in the brain .

Awards

In 2001 Brüning was awarded the Ernst and Berta Scharrer Prize of the German Society for Endocrinology. In 2005 he was awarded the Ferdinand Bertram Prize of the German Diabetes Society and the Wilhelm Vaillant Prize . In 2006 he was awarded a Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the DFG for 2007, endowed with 2.5 million euros . In 2009 he received the Ernst Jung Prize for Medicine and in 2013 the American Diabetes Association's Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award . In 2017, Brüning was elected to the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and a member of the Leopoldina . In 2018 he received the Paul Langerhans Medal from the German Diabetes Society and the Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker Prize from the Stifterverband and the Leopoldina. For 2019 he was awarded the Heinrich Wieland Prize .
