Walter Neupert (born October 24, 1939 in Munich ; † June 22, 2019 ) was a German biochemist , physician and cell biologist .

Life

After studying in Munich, he received his doctorate in biochemistry from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1968 and in medicine in 1970. He then worked there until his habilitation in 1972 as a research assistant and then as a private lecturer. He followed a call from the Institute for Biochemistry at the University of Göttingen in 1977. Since 1983 he has held the chair for Physiological Chemistry at the Medical Faculty at the Adolf Butenandt Institute of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich as the successor to Theodor Bücher . Neupert was a Fellow of the Max Planck Society at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried. He was also a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and, since 1994, a corresponding member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences . Since 1993 Neupert was also a member of the Leopoldina , the Schleiden Medal of which he was awarded in 1999.

Neupert's research area was mitochondria . He showed for the first time that mitochondria can import proteins post-translationally. Neupert and co-workers characterized the import apparatus in its molecular details, including the mitochondrial processing peptidase (MPP) in the matrix, which removes the pro-sequences from imported proteins.

His students include Franz-Ulrich Hartl (MPI for Biochemistry), Roland Lill (Professor in Marburg ) and Nikolaus Pfanner (Professor in Freiburg ). Neupert last lived in Germering .
