Nikolaus Pfanner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikolaus Pfanner (born September 10, 1956 in Simmerberg im Allgäu ) is a German physician specializing in biochemistry and cell biology . Together with Jürgen Soll , he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2004 .

Life

After graduating from high school in Lindau, Pfanner studied medicine in Munich and received his doctorate there in 1985. He stayed in Munich as a postdoctoral fellow until 1986 and in the following year took over the leadership of a research group with research on the molecular basis of the biogenesis of cell organelles . As part of this research, Pfanner spent a year at Princeton University . In 1990 he completed his habilitation in physiological chemistry . In 1992 apprenticeships were made to Marburg, Homburg, Berlin and Freiburg. Nikolaus Pfanner decided in favor of Freiburg and has since been Professor and Director at the Institute for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. In 1996 he was appointed expert reviewer for the German Research Foundation for Biochemistry. From 2009 to 2011 Nikolaus Pfanner was President of the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM). In 2000 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Nikolaus Pfanner is married and has two children.

research

Pfanner has made significant findings in cell research. He was able to discover several receptors and transport routes, so-called channels, of the proteins on their way from their "place of birth" in the cytosol to the mitochondria and describe their functioning. His research in the field of protein production and protein transport is now part of textbooks for cell biology and biochemistry.
