Howard Hughes Medical Institute
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a philanthropic organization in the United States . The organization is based in Chevy Chase , Maryland . It was founded in 1953 by the American entrepreneur Howard Hughes . With endowment assets of $ 18.2 billion , it is one of the richest foundations and largest private sponsor of academic biomedical research in America.
The flagship is the HHMI Investigator Program , which funds more than 300 scientists for at least five years. There is also a funding program for scientists at the beginning of their careers. Since 1987, the Science Education Program has also been promoting science education at primary schools. In 2006, the HHMI took a new path by opening the Janelia Research Campus .
In September 2016, Erin O'Shea was named HHMI's sixth President, previously serving as Vice President and Head of Science at HHMI.
