Purnell W. Choppin

Purnell Whittington Choppin (born July 4, 1929 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana ) is an American virologist and medical manager.

Choppin earned an MD from Louisiana State University in 1953 with a medical degree. As an intern he worked at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis , interrupted by a work as a medical officer in the US Air Force . From 1957 he was at Rockefeller University , where he researched influenza and parainfluenza viruses , in particular their replication , pathogenesis and gene expression . From 1959 he was a faculty member at Rockefeller University, in 1970 he was given a full professorship, and in 1983 he became vice president of the university for academic affairs. In 1985/1986 Choppin was President of the American Society for Virology , of which he was one of the founding figures in 1980.

In 1885 Choppin moved to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), and from 1987 he was President of the HHMI. Here he tripled the number of funded scientists and expanded the annual budget from 77 million to 556 million US dollars. In 1999 he resigned as President of the HHMI, his successor at the HHMI was Thomas R. Cech . Choppin then took on managerial positions at the Washington Advisory Group , a consulting firm in the medical field.

Choppin has received numerous awards, including several honorary doctorates . In 1977 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences , in 1988 a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1988 a member of the American Philosophical Society . In 1978 he received the Howard Taylor Ricketts Award from the University of Chicago and in 1984 the Selman A. Waksman Award in Microbiology from the National Academy of Sciences.
