Donald S. Fredrickson, 1961

Donald Sharp Fredrickson (born August 8, 1924 in Cañon City , † June 7, 2002 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was a physiologist and was the first to describe Tangier's disease in 1961 . Between 1975 and 1981, he held the office of director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) , among numerous other outstanding positions. In 1973 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences , 1975 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 1978 he received a Gairdner Foundation International Award . Since 1985 he was a member of the American Philosophical Society . The classification of primary hyperlipoproteinemia is named after him.
