from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Douglas Leonard Coleman (born October 6, 1931 in Stratford , Ontario , † April 16, 2014 in Lamoine , Maine ) was a Canadian biochemist and researcher at the Jackson Laboratory . His work was fundamental to the study of obesity and diabetes mellitus .

Life

Coleman earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from McMaster University in Hamilton in 1954, a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1956, and a Ph.D. in 1958. there.

Coleman spent his scientific career - until his retirement in 1991 - at the Roscoe B. Jackson Memorial Laboratory (now Jackson Laboratory ) in Bar Harbor , Maine . He started as a research assistant and went through numerous career stages up to head of a research group and (transitional) director.

Since his retirement, Coleman has dedicated himself to ecological issues such as small-scale forest management and landscape protection.

Act

Coleman discovered two mutations in mice : the variant obese can not produce a hormone (known today as leptin ) and tends to become obese - even with reduced food intake; the variant diabetes has the hormone in abundance, but can not utilize it in the hypothalamus and is therefore also prone to obesity. With attempts at parabiosis - the interconnection of parts of the circulation of two test animals, each homozygous for a genetic defect - Coleman was able to develop theories about the effect of the postulated hormone. Coleman also suggested that the widespread prevalence of obesity and diabetes mellitus among modern humans is the result of an evolutionary advantage of heterozygous individuals during periods of starvation. Many of Coleman's considerations were later confirmed by Jeffrey M. Friedman .
