story
The memorial was created 1969-1970 by Heinz Beberniß together with Gerhard Lichtenfeld and Sigbert Fliegel as part of the redesign of Halle's Riebeckplatz to become the central Ernst-Thälmann-Platz on the west side of the square in front of the teacher's house . It was unveiled on October 6, 1970.
In October 2001 the city council of Halle decided to demolish the memorial because it stood in the way of the necessary redesign of the Riebeckplatz, which had become the focus of the accident . In July 2003, the memorial was demolished despite protests from parts of the population.

In 1973 the monument was shown on a postage stamp of the Deutsche Post in the definitive series `` Aufbau in der DDR '' .
