European Rowing Championships 1973

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1973 European Rowing Championships were held on the Krylatskoje rowing channel in Moscow . The races in twelve boat classes took place from August 29 to September 2, 1973. The most successful rowing teams were sent by the Soviet Union with five gold medals and by the GDR with four gold medals.

In 1973 the European Championships were held for the last time with their old meaning. After the first edition in 1893, the EM developed into one of the highest quality competitions in European rowing, but in the later years numerous non-European nations also regularly took part. The EM therefore had the character of a world championship from the 1950s at the latest. The World Rowing Federation (FISA) therefore introduced the rowing world championships from 1962, initially every four years, and from 1974 annual world championships replaced the old European championships. Annual European championships have only been held again since 2007, but now in addition to the world championships.
