Edith Baumann began her competitive sports career at Munich RSV Bayern from 1910 . In 1968 and 1969 she took second place in the single behind Bärbel Kornhass at the German Championships . In 1970 Edith Baumann moved to the Passau rowing club from 1874 and formed a double scull with Brigitte Völkner . The boat won the German championship in 1970 and came second in 1971. At the European Championships in 1971 Edith Baumann won the bronze medal in the single. In 1972 Edith Baumann also returned to the single at the German Championships and took second place behind Karola Brandt .

After her marriage, she started as Edith Eckbauer in 1973, in 1973 she won the German championship title in the single and again took third place at the European Championships. In 1974 she reached fourth place in the single at the World Championships. After that, Edith Eckbauer switched from scull boats to belt boats . In 1975 she won the bronze medal at the world championships in a foursome with a helmsman .

In 1976 Edith Eckbauer won the German four-man championship, with only Thea Einöder from last year's boat being there. Together with Thea Einöder, she switched to the two-man without a helmsman , this boat won the 1976 Red Sea Regatta in Lucerne. The boat was then nominated for the Olympic premiere of women's rowing at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. In Montreal, the boats from the GDR won four out of six possible gold medals in women's rowing; the GDR only received silver behind Bulgarian boats in the two two-man boat classes. In the two without a helmsman, Edith Eckbauer and Thea Einöder took third place behind the boats from Bulgaria and the GDR. The bronze medal of the two was the first medal for West German women rowing and, along with two medals for rowers from the United States, the only medal in women rowing that did not go to rowers from the Eastern Bloc.

Edith Eckbauer ended her career after winning the bronze medal and received the Silver Laurel Leaf from Federal President Walter Scheel . She lives in Upper Bavaria and is active as a fitness trainer, among other things.
