In the third run, the boat from the GDR won ahead of the boat from the Soviet Union and the New Zealanders, these three boats directly reached the semi-finals. The fourth-placed Norwegians had to go to the hope race, which they won wafer-thinly ahead of the Canadians. In the first semi-final, the boats from the GDR, Canada and New Zealand qualified for the final, the second semi-final was won by the Norwegians, ahead of the boats from the Soviet Union and the Federal Republic of Germany. In the final, the boat from the GDR won with almost four seconds ahead of the Norwegians, followed by the boat from the USSR about one second behind the New Zealanders.
