Nicholas Purnell (born June 4, 1990 in St Leonards , New South Wales ) is an Australian rower . He won one silver medal (2018) and two bronze medals (2010, 2011) at world championships.

Athletic career

Purnell began rowing in 2006. In 2009 he finished fourth at the U23 World Championships with eighth place . In 2010 he won the bronze medal with the four without a helmsman . Also in the adult class, Purnell took part in the 2010 World Championships in New Zealand and won the bronze medal with eighth place. In 2011 he rowed in a foursome at the World Championships in Bled with Samuel Loch , Drew Ginn and Joshua Dunkley-Smith . The crew won the bronze medal behind the British and the Greeks. In 2012 Purnell finished sixth at the Olympic Games in London with the Australian eighth .

In the 2013 Rowing World Cup , Purnell competed with a double scull . At the 2013 World Championships , he started in single and finished 14th. In 2014 he also started in the World Cup in single, at the World Championships in Amsterdam he improved only slightly compared to the previous year and rowed to 13th place. After that, Purnell returned to the eighth. After finishing ninth at the 2015 World Championships , the eighth finished fourth in the last qualifying regatta for the 2016 Olympic Games , and the first three boats were allowed to start in Rio de Janeiro.

After a year off, Purnell returned to the Australian eight in 2018. At the 2018 World Championships in Plovdiv, the Australians won the silver medal behind the Germany eighth . In 2019 Purnell switched to the foursome. Timothy Masters , Nicholas Purnell, Jack Hargreaves and Joseph O'Brien won the World Cup regattas in Poznan and Rotterdam. For the World Championships in Linz / Ottensheim drew Alexander Hill for Masters on board. The Australian foursome finished sixth, qualifying for the 2020 Olympics.
