Matthijs Vellenga

Matthijs Vellenga (born October 29, 1977 in Grijpskerk , Province of Groningen ) is a former Dutch rower .

Career

Vellenga started in 2001 with the four-man with a helmsman at the Rowing World Cup in Munich and finished fourth and last. In 2002 he entered the World Cup in singles and doubles , but did not reach the A final. At the 2002 World Championships , the Dutch four-man without a helmsman finished fifth with Diederik Simon , Geert Cirkel , Matthijs Vellenga and Michiel Bartman . In 2003 Vellenga rowed again in double sculls, together with Gijs Vermeulen he only reached the D-final at the world championships and took 19th place. In 2004, Vermeulen and Vellenga belonged to the Dutch eighth , who won the silver medal behind the US eighth at the Olympic Games in Athens .

In 2005 Geert Cirkel, Jan-Willem Gabriëls , Matthijs Vellenga and Gijs Vermeulen took second place behind the British four in the four without a helmsman at both the World Cup in Lucerne and the World Championships in Gifu . In the same line-up, the Dutch won the bronze medal at both the 2006 and 2007 World Championships . At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , the three medal winners of the 2007 World Championships, New Zealand, Italy and the Netherlands, only reached the B final, New Zealand won the race ahead of the Dutch, who finished eighth overall.

After a two-year break, Vellenga returned to the World Cup in 2011 with eighth place. At the world championships , the eighth finished sixth. After finishing fifth in the Olympic eight-finals , the 2.00 m tall Vellenga ended his career.
