James Chapman (2014)

James Jonathan Chapman (born November 2, 1979 in Sydney ) is an Australian rower who was 2012 Olympic runner-up with the four-man without a helmsman .

Athletic career

Chapman began rowing in 1993. At the (unofficial) U23 World Championships in 2000, he finished second with the Australian eighth . His first final ranking at world championships in the adult class was achieved by Chapman in 2003 when he finished fourth with the four without a helmsman. At the 2004 Olympics he was a substitute for eighth. After a ninth place with the four at the 2005 World Championships , Chapman reached the final in Eton in 2006 with the eighth and finished fourth. After a poor 2007 season with the Australian foursome, Chapman rowed back in eighth in 2008, finishing sixth at the Olympics .

After a two-year break, Chapman returned to the international regatta courses in 2011. At the world championships he won the silver medal behind the Italian boat in a pair with a helmsman, together with William Lockwood and helmsman David Webster . In the Olympic season Lockwood and Chapman switched to the four-man without a helmsman and won the silver medal behind the British four-man at the 2012 Olympics together with Drew Ginn and Joshua Dunkley-Smith . At the 2014 World Championships , Chapman finished seventh with the Australian eighth, and the following year the eighth missed the direct Olympic qualification with ninth place.
