Johann Baptist Moroder

Johann Baptist Moroder-Lusenberg (born February 20, 1870 in Ortisei in Val Gardena , Austria-Hungary ; † May 24, 1932 , Ortisei in Val Gardena, Italy ), also called Batista de Trinadianesch , was a sculptor in South Tyrol . His sculptures , mostly of a sacred nature, are characterized by life-size and larger-than-life dimensions.

Life

Moroder was born as the first son of the painter Josef Moroder Lusenberg and his first wife Annamaria Sanoner-Mauritz on the farm Lusenberg-Jumbierch in Ortisei. At the age of 14 he began training as an apprentice in his father's workshop in Lusenberg. From 1886 to 1888 he enjoyed further training in the workshop of Franz Tavella in Ortisei like his cousin Rudolf Moroder-Lenert and Ludwig Moroder . In 1887 he also received special training from the then technical school director in Ortisei, Prof. Franz Haider . In 1895 he married Katharina Bernardi de Ianesc, and 11 children were born during the marriage. Between 1910 and 1918 he taught modeling and drawing at the art school in Ortisei.

Works (selection)

  • Around 1896 he created the Lusenberg monument out of porphyry (see picture).
  • In 1896 he began planning and building his own house and studio Villa Venezia in the Venetian style, which was then built between 1902 and 1903 (see pictures).
  • 1900 larger-than-life wooden angel as a grave monument of the Insam-Prinoth family in the cemetery of St. Ulrich (see picture).
  • 1892 Large marble Pietà at the grave of the Purger family in the same cemetery (see picture).
  • 1904 Design and installation of the giant statue of the Roman legionnaire at the Villa Venezia.
  • 1908 Design of the main altar of the Holy Trinity Church in Offenburg in Baden with high relief of larger-than-life figures made of light Savonniéres limestone .
  • 1916 Order by Field Marshal Conrad von Hötzendorf for four large sculptures depicting Saint Barbara, patron saint of railway workers on the occasion of the construction of the Val Gardena Railway , the Apostles Petrus and Paulus and a Tyrolean eagle made of concrete.
  • Holy Trinity on the gallery of the parish church of St. Ulrich.
  • In Val Gardena Museum two wooden sculptures of JB Moroder are currently on display: the Oswald von Wolkenstein horse, the equestrian figure was used for the collection of funds for the First World War and the St. Barbara, who as a monument in St. Ulrich am railway tunnel in the former.
