Franz Tavella (born October 10, 1844 in Wengen , Gadertal ; † December 12, 1931 in Brixen , South Tyrol ) was a Tyrolean sculptor and carver .

Life

The house that Franz Tavella had built in Ortisei and later sold.

Tavella was the son of Marianna Spisser and Filipp Tavella. At first he worked as a carpenter and after training as a sculptor with Ferdinand Demetz in Ortisei in Val Gardena, he went to the Academy in Vienna with Koenig for two years . In addition, in 1881 he was granted a scholarship of 250 fl. Plus a travel allowance of 15 fl. From the German and Austrian Alpine Association to enable him to train in ecclesiastical figural art in Josef Gasser's studio in Vienna. In 1895 he was awarded in Innsbruck for the statue of St. Anna and Maria, now in the parish church of Pieve di Livinallongo , in 1897 in Bozen and in 1900 at the Paris World Exhibition for the Pietà , now in the chapel of the dead in Brixen cemetery. He trained many sculptors in his workshop in Ortisei. He was one of the most important sculptors in Val Gardena . Student of his have included the Val Gardena Ludwig Moroder , Johann Baptist Moroder , Rudolf Moroder and Hans Perathoner , Klausner Valentin Gallmetzer and Georg Ruppe from Warmberg, Nesseltal in the Gottschee . None of his works can be viewed in Val Gardena.

In 1905 Tavella moved to Brixen, probably disturbed by the enthusiasm for trade in Val Gardena. The following notation from Josef Moroder-Lusenberg's sketchbooks should make Tavella's well-known aversion to art publishers in the valley understandable:

"There is a difference z. B. to carve a dying Cristus , on whose forehead one could read the divine tolerance and love for human beings, or a Maria from whose eyes tears appear to pearls and so on. to unite all pain in meekness with wonderful love or - a face that is identified by the fact that two eyes, a nose, mouth with them are in proper arrangement next to each other - sadly enough both are paid equally, the good carver must starve bad gets rich u. mocks the other - art goes to bread or better no bread brings. "

He died in extreme poverty in Brixen. He declined an offer from the Diocesan Museum of Bressanone to buy some of the works he was very fond of and offered his chisels for sale.
