St. Mauritius in Söll

The church of Söll , dedicated to St. Mauritius is consecrated, is located in the settlement of Söll a little north of the village of Tramin in the South Tyrolean lowlands . Finds from the area show that people settled here as early as Roman times .

The church and tower date back to the Romanesque period , but were repeatedly rebuilt in later times. In 1912 the Gothic style frescoes were exposed. They consist of several parts and have been preserved in varying degrees. The paintings on the north wall are believed to date from the 14th century , but are so faded that hardly anything can be seen. The paintings in the choir were created around 1400, but are not particularly well preserved.

The two pictures on the west wall in the international Gothic style are very well preserved and were probably created by a local painter at the beginning of the 15th century . The sacred painting shows scenes from the life of Jesus . Shown are the scene in the oil garden, the kiss of Judas . Jesus heals Malchus, whose ear Peter cut off with the sword. The two pictures are characterized by an abundance of figures and the painter's particular love for details and are not only of particular religious and art-historical value, but also a good source for the material culture of the late Middle Ages .

Some of the works in the church are said to be works by the artist Franz Tavella : a Gothic altar and an enthroned Mother of God with Infant Jesus on the side altar.
