As a poser (English = to pose 'to give oneself as', 'to pose'), more rarely also a poseur, a person is usually referred to pejoratively (derogatory) who, through external characteristics, such as clothing and hairstyle, or ostentatiously displayed belonging to a Subculture or its behavior tries to impress others.

In the 1980s, the term was used disparagingly by supporters of the emerging speed or thrash metal for bands and musicians of the hair metal scene that developed at the same time . Not only the “stage acting” of so-called poser bands such as Poison , Mötley Crüe or Bon Jovi became the target, but also their sometimes colorful clothes, teased hairstyles or makeup. Posern is accused of not seriously dealing with the matter and of wanting to belong to a subculture or profit from a trend.

So-called auto posers, who do unnecessary laps with their powerful and sometimes impermissibly tuned cars , cause considerable noise pollution in cities. The fine for this has been 100 euros since April 28, 2020 (previously 20 euros).

Beach posers go to bathing beaches to show off their bodies.
