American Woman is the sixth studio album by the Canadian rock band The Guess Who . It was released in January 1970 under the label RCA Victor and was produced by Jack Richardson. American Woman is the band's most successful album and was ranked ahead of the Beatles in singles sales this year in the USA thanks to the extracts No Sugar Tonight , No Time , Hand me Down World and, above all, American Woman .

History of origin

After Jack Richardson joined The Guess Who in 1967, he masked the average compositional and instrumental talent by adding engaging refrains to expressive riffs. The Guess Who came from a time when it was the top priority of rock bands to make people dance. Of course, they had higher ambitions that would allow them to play their own material. Before a band was granted that, they had to play at the local events, which meant adding their own songs between covers, sticking to a riff when it worked, and most importantly, paying attention to the audience's reaction.

American Woman came about by chance during an event when Randy Bachman tore a string on his guitar. He started playing a few notes on the piano to tune his new string as it became the song's famous riff. The dance floor filled and the band jammed on the reef as long as the mood lasted. A few weeks later, American Woman was a complete song and an integral part of their live sets.

The recordings for this album lasted from August 12 to November 16, 1969.
