The Ludwigshafen rowing club from 1878 (LRV) is the only rowing club in Ludwigshafen am Rhein and one of the oldest sports clubs in the city. In 2013 the association had almost 300 members. The LRV is a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Rowing Association and the German Rowing Association .

history

From the foundation to 2000

The Ludwigshafen rowing club was founded on August 1st, 1878 to promote rowing, strengthen the body and improve sociability. At the first general meeting, the 16 founding members elected CH Andersen as the first chairman. It was also Andersen who, as a former member of the Allgemeine Alsterclub Hamburg, promoted the establishment of a rowing club in Ludwigshafen.

In the following years the number of members rose sharply, own boats were purchased and in 1898 the boathouse in Ludwigshafen was inaugurated. At the second modern Olympic Games in 1900 in Paris , Otto Fickeisen , Hermann Wilker , Ernst Felle , Carl Lehle and helmsman Franz Kröwerath rowed the bronze medal for the LRV in a four with helmsman. 12 years later, a four-man from Ludwigshafen won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Stockholm with the rowers Otto Fickeisen, Hermann Wilker, Rudolf Fickeisen , Albert Arnheiter and helmsman Otto Maier . This development was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. Rowing was resumed in 1921.

At the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 , Paul Söllner won the gold medal in a racing team with the Mannheim rowing club Amicitia from 1876 . The following war years hit the LRV hard, the boathouse was completely destroyed in a bomb attack on Ludwigshafen and 57 rowers of the LRV did not return after the Second World War .

The LRV was re-established in 1946 as the first rowing club in the French occupation zone . Everyday rowing turned out to be difficult after the war, but the first regatta victories were won as early as 1947. In the following years the boathouse was rebuilt, boats were bought and youth work was intensified.

In the 1970s it was mainly Alois Bierl and Winfried Ringwald who were successful for the LRV. Together or with other teams, they won several German and European championships. Bierl won gold with the Bodenseevier at the 1972 Olympics in Munich and Winfried Ringwald took 5th place with Germany eighth .

In the following years many victories were rowed at national regattas thanks to the good youth work in the LRV. In addition, Roland Ehrenfels won the silver medal in the double scull at the 1988 World Championships together with Hartmut Schäfer from the Cologne rowing club from 1877 . Directed by Heinz Mohr and subsequently by Dr. Volker Nolte was able to achieve national regattas and international successes in the junior and senior class (U-23).

From the late 1980s, women's rowing determined the LRV. Andrea Klapheck , Beate Brühe and Karin Stephan were particularly successful under head coach Stefan Piesik . At the 1991 World Cup, Beate Brühe and Andrea Klapheck took fourth place in the quad sculls. Andrea Klapheck won gold three years later with the women's eighth at the World Championships in Indianapolis . In 1996 she took part in the Olympic Games in Atlanta .

In the 1990s, Karin Stephan was successful in lightweight women's rowing. Since 1994 she has achieved top positions at world championships, won silver in double sculls in 1998 and the gold medal in double sculls in 2000.

Recent history from 2000 to today

In the new millennium, it was above all Anja Hannöver, Sandra Schnitzer and Jochen and Martin Kühner who had achieved outstanding successes for the LRV on the national and international stage since 2001. In 2002 alone they rowed a total of four championship titles and two runner-up titles at the German U-23 championship, as well as a bronze medal at the U23 world championships by Sandra Schnitzer in Lgw. Women one. The twins Jochen and Martin Kühner also achieved a tenth place in the Lgw at the World Cup in Seville . Men two without.

In recent history, the club has mainly been active in national and international regattas as well as in German junior championships. Every year, the LRV is also represented at the regatta around Lake Geneva . In 2009 the Ludwigshafen rowing club, in cooperation with the Mannheim rowing club from 1875, provided a male eight in the newly founded rowing league . In the first season, the so-called "Rhein-Neckar-Eighth" qualified for the 1st Bundesliga and ended the season in 10th place in the table. In the 2010 season, the Rhein-Neckar-Eighth ranked 15th and was relegated to the 2nd rowing Bundesliga and did not register for the rowing Bundesliga the following year.

Location

Luitpoldhafen in Ludwigshafen

The Ludwigshafen rowing club has its boathouse in a central location on the Rhine in Ludwigshafen. From there there are many possibilities for rowing tours on the Rhine and Neckar . The directly adjacent Luitpoldhafen is mainly used for training and for beginners' courses. The Rheinufer Süd district has been under construction in the immediate vicinity of the boathouse since 2008 .

The Italian restaurant Ristorante della bona has also been located in the boathouse since April 2006 . After the renovation in 2007/2008 as part of the development of the new Rheinufer Süd district, an information office for GAG Ludwigshafen is also located on the upper floor.
