The remediation of the former industrial wasteland is intended to create the prerequisites for high-quality residential development on the water. At the same time, the municipal housing association GAG has converted the cleared port area on Parkinsel into a new development area for high-quality residential buildings.

With the new "Rheinufer Süd" residential area, the city center is to be moved back directly to the Rhine. Since then, the view of the Rhine has been possible again in many places. At the same time, a Rhine promenade with large green and recreational areas is to be created. Around 700 sophisticated apartments are to be built in the core area. The residential area stretches from the city center to the park island. The city park and the planned marina at Luitpoldhafen offer the right "feel-good setting".

In addition to a senior citizen's pen with 115 to 120 places and a student dormitory, an office and commercial building is also planned.

history

When the Luitpoldhafen was planned in 1891, the first buildings of the Sulzer company (later Halberg) and the roller mill were erected. A loading station was built at the roller mill , and further to the south the depot of the municipal transport company.

Many industrial plants were destroyed in the Second World War. The Halberg machine factory and foundry modernized its systems after 1945 and employed around 3,500 people at three locations.

In the 1990s, the city of Ludwigshafen, under Mayor Wolfgang Schulte, planned the development of the industrial wasteland in the southern inner city. The first well-known investor was the Mannheim company Fay, which set up the East Asia Institute directly on the banks of the Rhine in 1996. In 1998 the shopping and cinema center, which was built at great expense, opened in the Walzmühle. However, the sales and visitor numbers remained well below the publicly expected numbers.

Two years later, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for a four-story office building on the former site of the Halberger Hütte. But when it turned out that the soil was contaminated by heavy metals, the Compunet company withdrew from the project. The soil was then removed to a depth of two meters. The Lusanum Health Center has been located here since 2010.

In 2011, other old factory buildings of the former Halberg company were demolished.
