The Rhein-Galerie is a shopping center in the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein .
Project
On September 29, 2010 the Rhein-Galerie was opened on the area of the former port area at Zollhof. In addition to the new shopping center, a public town square has also been created directly on the Rhine. With this project the city center should be brought to the Rhine. There are 130 shops on a sales area of around 30,000 square meters. The focus of the branch mix is on textiles, perfumeries, jewelry, accessories as well as a large number of restaurants and cafes.
A business hotel with three to four stars and 180 rooms is also planned; this project should be implemented in 2016/2017. In memory of the Zollhofhafen, a shipyard hall and a now renovated harbor crane have been preserved in the outer area of the Rheingalerie. The hall was sold to Cyperfection (agency for digital brand management) in November 2011.
The total investment of the Hamburg company ECE Projektmanagement amounts to 220 million euros, 1,200 new jobs were created. On June 19, 2008 Union Investment Real Estate acquired 94.9 percent of the shares in Rhein-Galerie, 5.1 percent initially remained with ECE. These 5.1 percent were transferred in full to Union Investment at a later date.
The system is designed in such a way that there is a direct line of sight to the Rhine . The new shopping center can be reached by car, public transport, bicycle or on foot.

criticism
Citizens and individual tradespeople doubt whether this project can bring the promised development boost for the city. In this context, reference is made again and again to the Walzmühle shopping center , where a number of tenants have already moved out.
Proponents like the retail trade association, on the other hand, argue that the project will have a noticeable magnetic effect, especially in comparison to the Ludwigshafener Walzmühle due to its sheer size (130 shops compared to 25 in the Walzmühle), a renowned operator and the unique location in the region directly on the Rhine which will also benefit the ailing retail trade in the existing inner city.
