Park island

Location in the city of Ludwigshafen

The Parkinsel is part of the southern inner city of the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein . It is partly a port area, an upscale residential area and a city park.

The island, which lies opposite the Mannheimer Stephanienufer and the Reissinsel on the Rhine , originally belonged to today's district of Mundenheim and was then known as Mundenheimer Wäldchen .

history

Model of the Park Island and the southern city center around 1900

The Ludwigshafen Parkinsel is not of natural origin, but arose from the construction of the Luitpoldhafen between 1893 and 1898 from a separate part of the Mundenheim district. Even then, there was a dense riparian forest along the shoreline, the Mundenheim forest. Parkinsel has not actually been an island since 1968, as it was reconnected to the mainland by means of a dam.

Before the Rhine was straightened out , the Mundenheim forest was an alluvial forest with oak and elm trees and was flooded at least once a year. The forest floor soaked up the flood like a sponge and gradually released it again.

The Mundenheim forest was owned by the independent municipality of Mundenheim until 1899 . As early as 1898, the city of Ludwigshafen asked its neighboring community to cede the alluvial forest. But Mundenheim refused and in 1898 sold the grove to an investor who wanted to cut down the grove and build a housing estate on it. However, the Ludwigshafen district office did not approve this project. The municipality of Mundenheim then lodged a complaint with the State Ministry of the Interior in Munich. The royal Bavarian forest authority has now approved the deforestation of the Mundenheim forest. The approval that had already been granted was only withdrawn through intervention by Ludwigshafen's Lord Mayor Friedrich Krafft . In 1899 Mundenheim was incorporated and the Parkinsel also came into the possession of the city of Ludwigshafen. Now Lord Mayor Krafft was able to convert the grove into a park. In November 1900, the city council approved the construction of the park, which a city gardener hired two years earlier was supposed to plan.

At the end of the 1960s, Parkinsel became, strictly speaking, a peninsula when the lock lock at the southern end of Luitpoldhafen was closed and replaced by a navigable dam.

At the end of May / beginning of June 2013 there was a heavy flood that also hit the park island. The entire city park was almost two meters under water. Because of the flooding, the tents that had already been erected for the Festival of German Films had to be dismantled again at short notice. After the water was still one meter in the city park on June 5, 2013, a week before the festival, the festival was relocated to a wasteland opposite the park island on the mainland at Luitpoldhafen. This decision was necessary because after the flood had receded there was no longer enough time to check the stability of all trees; Because of the softened soil, there was a risk that trees and their roots would tip over.

Friends of the Parkinsel

In June 2013, the citizens of the Parkinsel founded a development association with the aim of protecting the maintenance and care of the city park on the Parkinsel and supporting and promoting it through voluntary work.

Quote from Ernst Bloch

The philosopher Ernst Bloch remembered his childhood while walking along the Rhine in 1970:

" And my old Dutch friends, the sailors, who rose in front of me again, who at the age of eight first taught me to smoke a pipe with Dutch tobacco, with whom I went to the Mundenheimer Wald, the Munnemer Wald, where we blindworms caught, skinned, roasted on fire and poured powder on it instead of salt as real men. "

Quote from Hedwig Laudien

The writer Hedwig Laudien writes about the Mundenheim forest:

" Eerie grove
It wasn't exactly cozy to call this Mundenheim forest. With its dense undergrowth, the meshwork of clematis, the leaves and flowers of which hung down from the tall elms in abundance, and its rotten, ghostly swamp willows, which were reflected in still waters, it was more likely to evoke a slight shudder. "

nature

English oak , ash , field maple and some examples of field elm grow in the hardwood floodplain of the park island . The elm population was originally larger, but was badly damaged by the elm beetle . In addition, wild apple , hawthorn and wild pear can be found in the hardwood floodplain . In the herb layer of alluvial forest, there is the two-leaf squill, wood anemone , Blutampfer , Carex sylvatica and Arum .

In midsummer, rare species grow on the embankment, such as the edged leek , the real hairline, the willow and meadow elephant . These species are threatened by the increasing bush cover on the banks of the Rhine.

Around 80 species of birds live on the park island, including green woodpecker and great spotted woodpecker , wren , goldfinch and golden cockerel . Since around 1999 there has also been a flock of around 50 ring-necked parakeets on the park island.

The park island is also known for its abundance of very old trees. The plane tree avenue on the shore is one of the hallmarks of the park island.
