The Ludwigshafen (Rhein) Middle Station is a 2003 erected breakpoint of Bahnhof Category  3 in the southern center of the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein . Located directly at the public transport hub Berliner Platz , travelers can also change to all parts of the city, to Mannheim and the entire surrounding area.

location

The geographical location of Ludwigshafen main station on the outskirts of the city made it necessary to build a new station in a central location, at the so-called “south pole” of the city center. Opened on December 14, 2003 in the course of the commissioning of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn , the station, which has been elaborately constructed since 1994 for reasons of the cityscape, was very well received by passengers from the start.

investment

The rail hall of the stop was planned as an architectural eye-catcher, with which the former function of train stations as representative city gates and "cathedral of progress" is linked. It is 156 meters long and up to 41 meters wide with around 6,500 square meters of glass. The supports are set wide to increase the impression of lightness. Construction of the strikingly curved roof construction began at the end of 2002. In 2004, the reception building designed by Jux Gruppe GmbH and the architect Egon Jux and the neighboring Rhine bridge received the Renault Traffic Future Award as a symbol of modern, human-friendly traffic architecture .

The stop has an outside platform (track 1) and a central platform (tracks 2 and 3). Most of the platforms are spanned by this track hall with a central aisle and two side aisles. On the south side, a fourth track runs through the stop, which cannot be reached via a platform. Mainly goods traffic , occasionally long-distance trains towards Mannheim, pass the stop on this track .

Originally, the stop was only intended for the handling of local traffic , especially the S-Bahn on the main route between Mannheim Hbf and Ludwigshafen. However, the plans were subsequently changed with regard to the length of the platform, so that the stop is also designed for ICE of the second and third generation.

Immediately to the east of the stop is the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke , on which the railway line crosses the Rhine . For this reason, the breakpoint itself is several meters above the surrounding area. Access is from the east side from the connecting path between Berliner Platz and the “Walzmühle” shopping center via stairs, escalators and lifts. On the west side of the platforms there is access via stairs from the railway overpass over Mundenheimer Straße. Barrier-free access has also been taken into account from this side, and there are corresponding building gaps for the installation of elevators.
